Description

The colourful, mainly Eastern cosmopolitan, suburb of Fordsburg lies to the west of the city of Johannesburg, (Egoli)- place of Gold - the commercial hub of South Africa.

Fordsburg has a varied and rich History of a multitude of significant events. Numerous meetings focused on the struggle for freedom of the disfranchised.

Many political Veterans such as Nelson Mandela and prominent community figures of the time had engaged in rallies and marched at the now well known Red Square area. Some even still reside there.

The predominantly Indian Business community of the historical suburb of Vrededorp, more commonly known as Fietas, were displaced under the unjust Apartheid Group Areas Act in the late 1950's. They were forcibly removed to The Oriental Plaza.

Through determination and sheer hard work as well as persistence, the enterprising traders placed the Oriental Plaza, now a famous Icon and South African Landmark, On the Tourist Map. It has coined the term "The Mecca of Shoping"
